There are two components to Convert to PDF - the Convert to PDF printer and the Convert to PDF application that launches each time you print to the Convert to PDF printer.

The Convert to PDF printer is used the same way you would use any other printer. It appears in your Printers and Faxes (Devices and Printers on Windows 7 or later) folder and is available from any application where you have an option to print a file.

Instead of creating a paper copy of your original document, like a LaserJet or other hardware printer would, Convert to PDF makes an electronic copy of your document. This electronic copy is used to create a PDF file.
